Senior Trip 1959

A special "Thank You" to Dr.  B. Ray Henry for locating his slides and formatting them for this presentation.

Dr. Henry and wife Betty and Miss. Johnston  were the Chaperones  for the 1959 Senior Trip.  Dr. Henry was also the 6th grade teacher for many of us in 1952-53.  At the time of this trip he was our School Superintendent and later President of Jefferson College in Missouri.   We have always considered Dr. and Mrs. Henry as part of our class along with Miss Johnston.

#1 on the charts was Battle of New Orleans -of course we found it exciting in New Orleans.

DAY 1 - APRIL 25, 1959

We started our week trip to Mississippi, Louisana and Florida early-early Saturday morning.

APRIL 25, 1959

The night before was our Senior Prom-so you're looking at a group that has had little to no sleep. I doubt if any of us remember much about the first 8 hours of the trip.

BOAT RIDE TO SHIP ISLAND

Glen, Ginny, Jan, Flo, and Sharon in forground.

TO SHIP ISLAND AND FORT MASSACHUSETTS

We stayed at the Trade Winds Hotel in Biloxi. I don't think we got a lot of sleep the night before.

BUS RIDE - NAP TIME

You snooze-you loose. Someone was always ready with a can of Burma Shave to decorate the face of the sleepers.

BUS DRIVER

He must have been a saintly man. I don't remember him ever calling us down or any complaint.

CATCH A NAP IN ANY POSITION

We were so tired from staying up all night we could sleep in any position-any place-any time.

WHY DID WE PAY FOR MOTELS?

Some of us stretched out in the ilse.

NEW ORLEANS

GOING OR COMING FROM SHIP ISLAND

I believe this is the return trip. Bonnie trying on Glen's shorts with both legs in one side.

NEW ORLEANS

I wonder how much of this area was under water after Hurricane Katerina.

PENSACOLA, FLORIDA

When we first saw the beach from the bus we thought it was salt it was so white. Most of us had never been to Florida-in fact-it was the first beach for the majority.

SHIP ISLAND

The board walk leaving Ship Island to our boat.

BOAT RIDE TO SHIP ISLAND

To name a few - Art, Janice, Nadine, Harold

MORE GOOFIN' OFF IN GLEN'S PANTS

Flo got in on the act with Bonnie-now Flo is in one leg and Bonnie in the other. Poor Glen-he was a good sport.

NEW ORLEANS

I believe this is another street scene of New Orleans

BILOXI SHORE LINE

Heading back to Biloxi after a long and pleasant day at Ship Island.

New Orleans - St Louis Catholic Cathederal

Oldest Cathederal in the United States

Possibly at the antebellum home tour in Natchez

We drove by several old southern masions but only toured one inside.

Near Jackson MS. We were greeted with songs by an all male choir and a talk from Dr. Jones, founder of Piney Woods.

Returning From Ship Island

Civil War Battle Field in Vicksburg

Battle of New Orleans was at the top of the chart during our trip. It was playing on the bus radio when we toured this battlefield.1 song was Battle of New Orleans by Johny Horton when we visited this battlefield.
