Patricia Sue (DeProw) Ockel
From then to now
My parents were Dick and Dolly DeProw and I was born and raised in Tallapoosa, MO and attended school there until the third or fourth grade. That is when they closed the school and I attended the Gideon schools until I graduated. My parents opened a small grocery store in Tally when I was in the first grade and Mom continued to work in it until she developed cancer in 1989 and sold the business at age 76. The Post Office was in our store building and Mom was substitute Post Master also. Since my Dad was also a brick mason, I not only helped in the store but did a lot of the housekeeping and cooking at home. In the fall I picked cotton like all the other kids for money for school clothes
It was like a vacation when I went to “The Cape” to college. There I met Art Ockel from St. Louis County and in June 1962 we were married, and after he graduated we moved to the big city. We moved back to this area in 1969 when Art went to work as Quality Control Engineer with Federal Mogul in Malden. We moved to Dexter in 1972.
We have two children. Ken was born in 1967, he is married to Elizabeth DePew and they have three children, Kate, 15 yrs., Anna, 8 yrs and Dakota age 5. He graduated from Murray State University and is employed with Procter and Gamble in Cape Girardeau, MO. He is also in the Army National Guard and has just returned from Iraq. Liz has gone back to college and is completing her degree in Education. They live on 40 acres and have 25 acres in peaches just outside Campbell, MO. Deborah was born in 1969 and she is married to John Chapman and they have three boys, Brett age 8, Brandon, 6 yrs and Bryson 1 yr. She graduated from Cape with a major in math and computer science. She has also received a Doctorate in Education. She was the Math Curriculum Director for Pulaski County in Arkansas but the last two years has worked for JBHM, an Education Consulting Co and she is the Arkansas Mathematics Director. They currently live in Cabot AR. They will be moving to Winterset, Iowa when school is out. John has accepted a job as Comptroller for Brach Candy Co. in that area. She is interviewing for a Math Curriculum Director for a local school district.
Being a wife and mother has been the most important jobs I have held and the most gratifying. To help pay the bills I am certified as an Interior Designer and also still maintain my Real Estate license. Along with dabbling in Real Estate I worked as a Customer Service Rep. for a local factory then as Credit Manager for a Mfg. Co. When they went out of business in Missouri, I worked in Accounts Receivable and Collection for a local company for the 5 years before I retired in 2003. I have belonged to Altrusa International, Inc. of Dexter, MO since the early 1980’s. This is a community service organization and I have held all offices and chaired all the committees. I do a lot of volunteer work in the community and in my church. The thing I enjoy the most now is spending time with my six Grandkids. Since my health hasn’t been good the last couple of years I have cut back some on my volunteer work but my faith has kept me going.
